MOONDOG was born Louis Thomas Hardin in Marysville, Kansas, on May 26, 1916. At the age of 16, a dynamite cap exploded in his face, permanently robbing him of his eyesight.
Hardin adopted the name Moondog that same year, and eventually became a regular fixture on Manhattan's streets, often dressed in full viking regalia.
